뮤직비디오 촬영이 끝났다. 기념사진을 찍기 위해 모였다. 스태프들은 장비를 정리하기 시작했다. 

그때, 누군가 춤을 췄다. 노래는 다시 시작됐다. 모두가 몸을 움직였다. 대열은 흐트러졌다. 방향도 제각각. 그래도 괜찮았다.

바람이 불든, 조명이 꺼지든, 상관없었다. 모두가 그 순간을 즐겼다. 곳곳에서 함성과 미소가 터져 나왔다. 기념사진은 플래쉬몹이 됐다. 

방탄소년단이 '퍼미션 투 댄스'(Permission to Dance)로 하고 싶었던 말을 함축적으로 보여준 순간이다.

누구나 들을 수 있고, 누구나 부를 수 있고, 누구나 출 수 있고, 누구나 즐길 수 있다는 것. 그것들을 누리는 데는 ‘허락이 필요 없다’고 강조했다. 

◆ Permission to ‘Sing’ 

누구나 따라부를 수 있다. ‘퍼미션 투 댄스’는 댄스팝이다. 사운드는 경쾌하다. 목소리는 부드럽다.

방탄소년단은 “에드 시런이 선물해준 곡”이라며 “심장을 뛰게 하고, 춤을 추게 만든다”고 설명했다.

이 곡은 전반적으로 8비트를 유지한다. 누구나 리듬을 타기 좋다. 방탄소년단이 이전에 보여줬던 힙합보다 쉽다. 남녀노소가 어깨를 들썩일 수 있다. 

멜로디도 복잡하지 않다. 특히 코러스 파트 ‘Da na na na na na na’ 부분은 누구나 따라부르기 쉽다.

떼창도 절로 나온다. 2분 34초, 뷔의 “Say!”에 맞춰 브레이크(break)를 한다. 악기는 빠지고 박수 소리만 흘러나온다. 

멤버들은 한목소리로 합창한다. 이때 군중이 등장, 다 함께 노래한다. 그 위에 지민이와 정국이가 애드리브를 쌓았다. 

◆ Permission to ‘Listen’

누구나 들을 수 있다. 방탄소년단은 수어를 퍼포먼스에 녹였다. 빅히트 뮤직 측은 ‘디스패치’에 “(방탄소년단이) 더 많은 사람에게 희망의 메시지를 전하기 위해 기획했다”고 전했다.

방탄소년단은 먼저 대표 단어를 정했다. ‘즐겁다’, ‘춤추다’, ‘평화’를 뜻하는 수화를 찾았다. 전문가들과 여러 차례 논의했다. 메시지가 잘 전달되는지 확인했다.

RM은 “우리가 (여태) 그 부분(수어)에 대해서는 ‘생각을 못 했었구나’ 싶었다”며 “즐거운 작업이었다. 감동하셨다는 분들도 계셔서 굉장히 좋았다"고 말했다.

한국에는 약 39만 명의 청각 장애인이 있다. 전 세계에는 15억 명이 있다. 방탄소년단은 모두에게 ‘보이는 언어’를 택했다. 한국이 아닌 국제 수어를 택한 것.  

물론, 일회성 관심은 아니다. RM은 청각장애 학생들의 음악 교육을 위해 기부해왔다. 뷔는 전 세계 졸업생들에게 소리 없는 박수를 보냈다. 

‘러브 유어셀프’ 월드 투어 때도 수어로 공연 통역을 했다. 미국 유명쇼에서 ‘버터’를 수어로 표현하기도 했다. 

하루아침에 생긴 마음이 아니다. 방탄소년단은 늘 '배리어 프리’(barrier free)에 앞장서 왔다. 그렇게, 들리지 않아도 들을 수 있는 음악을 만들었다. 

◆ Permission to ‘Enjoy’ 

누구나 즐길 수 있다. 방탄소년단은 뮤직비디오가 끝난 후에도 춤을 이어갔다. 노래는 끝났지만, 즐거움은 끝나지 않았다. 

일례로, 쿠키 영상이 이를 대변한다. 빅히트 뮤직 측은 “촬영이 끝나고 단체 사진을 찍으려다가 자연스럽게 플래쉬몹이 됐다”며 비하인드를 전했다. 

짜인 각본이 아니었다. “허락이 필요 없이 ‘누구나’ 즐겁게, 자유롭게 함께 모여 몸을 움직인다는 느낌으로 했다”고 말했다. 

“방탄소년단은 항상 음악을 통해 전 세계에 다양한 메시지를 던져 왔습니다. 이번에도 시대상을 고려했어요. 고민을 거듭했죠.”(BTS 관계자)

방탄소년단이 팬데믹 시대를 살아가는 사람들에게 주는 위로와 희망이다. 이전보다 음악은 라이트해졌지만 메시지는 결코, 가볍지 않다.

방탄소년단이 그동안 수없이 강조해왔던 것이다. 인종도 문제 되지 않고, 신체적인 조건도 상관없고, 누구나 즐길 수 있다는 것.  

당신이 누구더라도, 어디에 있다 해도, (We don't need) Permission to Dance!

The music video shoot is over. Everyone gathers around to take a commemorative photo. The staff begin to tidy up equipment.

Then, someone dances. The song starts again. Everyone moves their bodies. They are no longer in formation. Each dance in different directions. Whatever it is, it’s okay.

It does not matter that the wind is blowing, or there is no lighting. Everyone enjoys the moment. Shouts and smiles burst out from all over the place.

A flash mob spreads out where they were going to take a commemorative photo. The moment shows exactly what BTS wanted to covey through “Permission to Dance.”

Anyone can listen, anyone can sing along, anyone can dance, and anyone can enjoy it. They stressed that "you don't need permission" to enjoy these things.

◆ Permission to “Sing”

Anyone can sing along. “Permission to Dance” is a dance-pop song. The sound is light and cheerful. Voices are soft.

"It's a gift from Ed Sheeran," BTS said. "It makes our hearts beat and our bodies dance."

Overall, the song maintains an eight-beat rhythm. A rhythm easy for anyone to groove to. It is easier than the hip-hop songs BTS showed before. Anyone and everyone can move their shoulders to it.

The melody is not complicated either. Especially, the chorus part "Da na na na na na na" is easy for anyone to catch on to.

The sing-along comes to you automatically as well. 2 minutes and 32 seconds into the song, a break starts with V's "Say!" The instruments cut out and rhythmic clapping remains.

All the members sing in unison. A crowd appears, and they sing all together. Jimin and Jungkook built ad-libs on top of the melody line.

◆ Permission to “Listen”

Anyone can listen to it. BTS incorporated sign language into the performance. Big Hit Music told “Dispatch” that "(BTS) planned it to deliver their message of hope to more people."

BTS first chose some key words. They found sign language for “joy”, “dance”, and “peace”. They had several consultations with professionals. They checked if the message was delivered well.

RM said, “we realized that (until now) we hadn’t thought about that part (sign language). I had fun working on it. I was also very happy to hear that there were people who found it touching.”

There are about 390,000 deaf people in Korea. Around the world, there are 1.5 billion. BTS chose a “visible language” for everyone: They chose international sign language, not Korean.

Of course, this is not a one-off; RM has been donating to music education for deaf students. V gave a silent round of applause to graduates all over the world.

There were also sign language interpreters for the “Love Yourself” world tour. They signed "butter" on a famous American talk show as well.

Their interest did not appear overnight. BTS has always been at the forefront of becoming “barrier free”: they made music that could be heard without hearing.

◆ Permission to “Enjoy”

Anyone can enjoy it. BTS continued to dance even after the end of shooting the music video. The song was over, but the fun was not.

Take a look at the behind-the-scenes video, which shows exactly this. According to Big Hit Music, “they were going to take a group photo after the shooting, but it naturally turned into a flash mob."

It was not scripted. "We did it with the feeling that “anyone” can gather around to move happily and freely together without needing permission," they added.

"BTS has always sent a variety of messages around the world through music. Again, we took the times into consideration. We put a lot of thought into it.” (BTS’s associates)

BTS is consolation and hope for people living in the pandemic era. Their music may have become lighter than before, but their message is never light.

It is what BTS has emphasized countless times. That race does not matter, physical conditions do not matter, and that anyone can have fun.
